Updated 3/11/2017 – First chart now reflects holding companies.
Today we will be looking at some interesting data from the California Department of Insurance. Specifically, the justified complaint ratio across the largest auto insurers in California. Every year, the department publishes a statistical summary of all non-frivolous consumer complaints attached to the largest insurance companies operating in the state. The ratio is calculated as the number of complaints per 100,000 vehicles insured by any given company. I’ve summarized the top 30 insurers in this first graph (you are able to hover over any point to see additional information).
I also took the liberty of aggregating companies into their holding groups for easier readability. For any additional clarification, please see the Department website. (A previous rank of 0 indicates no data.)
Largest California auto insurers – Consumer complaints per 100k insured vehicles – (Group view)
For consistency, I’ve produced an original raw graph which contains 50 of the largest companies based on the number of insured vehicles. This view is slightly more difficult to understand because many insurers use several companies to write business (often tailored to preferred and sub-standard risks). If you know the exact company, this graph may provide you with greater clarity.

Please note that this is only one metric used to judge the quality of an auto insurer, any purchasing decision should not be based solely on this information.
